Scott, LA-11/7/25 – Temperatures are projected to begin to drop into the low 30s early next week as a strong front moves into Acadiana. The Scott Fire Department reminds everyone to stay safe while keeping warm this season. Cold weather often brings an increase in home heating fires and electrical hazards, but a few simple precautions can help prevent tragedy.

Fireplace Safety Tips:

  • Have your fireplace and chimney inspected and cleaned before use.

  • Always use a protective screen to prevent sparks from escaping.

  • Burn only dry, seasoned wood—never trash or treated materials.

  • Allow ashes to cool completely before disposing of them in a metal container.

    Electrical and Heating Safety:

  • Avoid overloading outlets or power strips. Plug space heaters and major appliances directly into wall outlets.

  • Keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn, like curtains, bedding or furniture.

  • Never leave heaters, fireplaces or candles unattended.

  • Inspect cords for damage and replace any that are frayed or worn.

    Taking these simple steps can help keep your family and home safe during the colder upcoming colder days.
