FIRE PREVENTION

Our team is dedicated to providing efficient, effective and equitable life safety and property protection to the citizens and visitors of Scott.  We will do so actively, demonstrating ethical conduct, excellent customer service, and professional integrity in all areas of fire inspections, fire investigations, plans examinations and public education.

FIRE INSPECTIONS

Fire inspectors perform "fire and life safety" inspections and work with contractors and developers to provide the safest possible buildings with regard to the standard.

FIRE INVESTIGATIONS

Fire Prevention conducts investigations into suspicious fires to determine their origin and cause.  Whether a fire is accidental in nature or intentionally set, the investigation team determines action needed to prevent future occurrence, such as product recalls, public awareness, increased code compliance inspections, or arresting and prosecuting an arsonist.

PLAN REVIEW

Fire prevention reviews construction plans to determine compliance with the adopted 2012 International Fire and Building Codes as well as all local codes, ordinances, standards and regulations.  Fire Plan reviewers look for such things as adequate and compliant fire safety systems, fire resistant building materials, Fire Department access and proper and adequate exiting.

PUBLIC EDUCATION

The Fire Department provides public education programs upon request.  Both our stations and fire prevention personnel have an active presence in our community.  Some of the programs we offer include station tours, fire extinguisher training, home escape planning and general fire safety for children.

WINTER FIRE PREVENTION TIPS

  • Home fires occur more in winter than in any other season.
  • Install and test carbon monoxide alarms at least once a month.
  • Have a qualified professional clean and inspect your chimney and vents every year.
  • Store cooled ashes in a tightly covered metal container, and keep it outside at least 10 feet from your home and any nearby buildings.
  • Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet from any heat source like fireplaces, wood stoves, radiators or space heaters.
  • Plug only one heat-producing appliance (such as a space heater) into an electrical outlet at a time.

HOLIDAY FIRE PREVENTION TIPS

  • Only use decorations that are flame-retardant or not flammable.
  • Check holiday lights each year for frayed wires or excessive wear.
  • Don’t link more than three strands of holiday lights.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended. Consider using battery-operated flameless candles.
  • Keep your live Christmas tree away from heat sources and room exits.
  • Water your live Christmas tree daily to keep it from becoming dry.
