Explosion

On Sunday at 10:49 a.m., Scott Fire Department was dispatched to an explosion in the 900 block of Oak Street. Upon arrival, firefighters observed multiple individuals outside at the intersection of Oak and St. Mary Street. Firefighters learned that the explosion occurred at a residence in the 1200 block of St. Mary Street, resulting in significant damage to the home.

It is believed that propane inside a 5-gallon tank on a gas grill, located near the front porch, expanded substantially throughout the day due to warming temperatures. The excessive pressure buildup was unable to escape due to a malfunctioning or defective pressure relief valve on the tank, causing the explosion.

The explosion severely damaged the home, blowing out a door, breaking several windows and sending shrapnel through walls throughout the home. Neighboring homes also received damage from flying shrapnel.

The occupant, located in another area of the home, was able to safely escape without injury.

Fortunately, no firefighters or civilians were injured during the incident.
