Lithium Battery Fire

Scott, LA-12/1/25 – At 10:56 A.M., Scott Fire Department responded to the 100 block of Silver Medal Drive for a reported residential fire. Upon arrival, personnel discovered a shed in the backyard fully engulfed in flames, with fire extending to a nearby wooden privacy fence. Firefighters quickly contained the fire, preventing it from spreading to a neighboring shed and residence.

An investigation determined the fire to be accidental in nature. Evidence indicates the possible ignition source to be thermal runaway of a lithium battery used for lawn equipment. Thermal runaway occurs when a battery produces more heat than it can safely dissipate, creating a rapid chain reaction that can lead to ignition. The fire is believed to have spread to nearby flammable materials, including paint thinner, gasoline and propane.

Safety Tips for Lithium Battery Storage

To help prevent similar incidents, please remember the following safety practices:

Keep away from flammable materials: Store batteries—especially spare ones—away from anything that can burn, such as cleaning supplies, paper, fabric, or wooden items. • Store in a cool, dry place: Avoid exposure to direct sunlight or high temperatures (such as inside vehicles). • Use a protective case: Keep spare batteries in original packaging, a battery case, or a fire- resistant container to prevent contact with other batteries or metal objects.
Avoid improper charging: Charge batteries at room temperature and only use manufacturer- approved chargers.
Watch for warning signs: Stop using any battery that becomes hot, swollen, discolored, leaking, or emits unusual sounds.
Dispose of batteries properly: Do not place lithium-ion batteries in household trash. Please recycle them at an approved battery recycling location.
