7/31/2020

July 29, 2020 – Lafayette Fire Chief Robert P. Benoit and Scott Fire Chief Chad P. Sonnier invites you to the 103rd recruit graduation academy of the Lafayette Fire Department. The graduation ceremony will take place at Lafayette Fire Training Center, 300 N. Dugas Road; Friday, July 31st at 9:00 a.m. The event will occur on the grounds of the complex to ensure adequate social distancing.
The 103rd Recruit Academy is comprised of 13 recruits: 10 for Lafayette and 3 for Scott Fire Department. The fire service is honored to have U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy as the guest speaker for this special event.

In February of 2019 Scott Fire Department applied for a SAFER (Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response) Grant. Chief Sonnier and the City of Scott were notified by Senator Bill Cassidy’s Office that they were awarded the grant in the amount of $278,826.45, which would cover three (3) full-time firefighters for the City of Scott in September of 2019. In an October 2019 release, Fire Chief Sonnier was grateful for being chosen as a recipient of the SAFER grant through FEMA. In his release, he noted, “accepting this grant award is a huge step in the development of the Scott Fire Department to provide the citizens of Scott with the best fire protection available and secure the current PIAL Class 3 rating keeping homeowners fire insurance rates at a minimum.” Senator Cassidy officially presented the City of Scott and the fire department with the grant in October.

As part of our commencement, U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy graciously agreed to address these young recruits after completing 16 weeks of training. Fire Chiefs Benoit and Sonnier are forever thankful for his hard work in this endeavor and continued support for the fire service.
